Shale Energy Community Planning

Energy rich rural communities, especially those experiencing growth due to the wave of Shale Oil and Gas production in the U.S., are often unprepared to address the myriad of impacts that result from these unconventional energy extraction technologies.  Impacts occur not only in the economic realm, but also in the social and environmental sectors of community.  They are both short-term and long-term, and can be beneficial or detrimental to the overall fabric of community.

To address these potential impacts, an OSU Extension Team has developed and piloted a sustainable community development planning process to meet the needs of local leadership and residents in shale impacted communities.  This sustainability model aims to inform a long-term plan that address and balance the social, environmental and economic impacts of energy development.

This web site will provide useful documents and resources for the community leaders, organizational representatives, public officials and community residents involved in the creation of a sustainable community development plan.  If you have any questions, please contact Myra Moss (moss.63@osu.edu).
